This season the hem of a wedding gown rarely stays still. Instead of one smooth layer, brides are choosing cascades — rows of soft ruffles that fall across the skirt, spill into the train, or appear on one shoulder only. The ruffle is back, but without the heaviness of older collections: it is lighter now, airier, and cut so that it travels with the body rather than against it.
A softer ruffle, a calmer silhouette
The difference lies in how much fabric is used and where it is placed. Ruffles are no longer gathered tightly onto a single seam; they are set in wide, shallow arcs that wrap the silhouette and finish low, usually towards one side. The bodice stays clean, and volume begins only below the hip or at the back. In photographs the effect reads as sculpture; in movement it behaves almost like water.
That is why this season's cascades also suit brides who never imagined themselves in volume. A single ruffle laid diagonally across the skirt is enough to bring movement, with no other ornament at all.
The fabric decides how a ruffle holds
- Organza keeps its shape and stands slightly away from the body; its ruffles stay legible even when you are standing still.
- Layered tulle gives a softer, almost blurred edge — lovely for open-air ceremonies and for evening light.
- Crepe and heavier satin need fewer ruffles, but each one carries a defined shadow; brides who want a quieter, architectural line tend to choose these.
- Chiffon moves the most and answers the wind best, which makes it a natural choice outdoors.
What to look for at a fitting
A cascade cannot be judged standing still in front of a mirror. Walk, sit down, turn, let someone lift the hem — only then will you see whether the ruffle stays where it was placed or twists and opens where you would rather it did not. Look, too, at where the first line of ruffles begins: set too high, it shortens the leg; opening from the knee and continuing into the train, it lengthens the whole figure. If you plan to dance late, ask about a hidden loop for lifting the train and about how the fabric should be pressed after travelling.
