The layer no one sees does more work than you would expect. It holds the bodice line, smooths the transition over the hip, and decides whether a satin column falls quietly or breaks at every step. Most brides think about what goes under the gown last. It belongs near the beginning — certainly by the second fitting.
The cut chooses the underwear
This season's bodices are firmly built: laced corset backs, visible boning, an inner structure that supports the bust on its own. With a gown like that a bra is usually redundant and only adds bulk beneath the fabric. Fluid columns in heavy satin and dropped-waist lines, on the other hand, forgive nothing — every edge, hook and elastic prints through a smooth surface.
- Corset bodice: no bra; sewn-in cups can be positioned during a fitting if you want more support.
- Satin, crepe and mikado: seamless pieces with laser-cut edges, or soft lace shorts that do not grip.
- Tulle and lace over skin: an underlayer in your own skin tone, with no trims that read through the sheer panel.
- Ball skirt and organza: a soft petticoat with one hoop rather than three — this season's volume is full but composed.
- Open back or deep neckline: adhesive cups, or a band that disappears into the seam.
Skin tone, never white
The rule that surprises almost everyone: white is rarely worn under a wedding dress. Beneath fine tulle or silk crepe, white lingerie reads as a paler patch, while a shade close to your skin simply vanishes. The same applies to hosiery and to shaping pieces — if you need them at all, keep them short, soft and free of hard edges at the thigh.
What stays on the skin matters just as much. Oils, body lotion and deep self-tan transfer onto silk and lace and seldom come out. Finish body care the day before, and have hair and make-up done before the gown goes on.
Bring it all to the fitting
No advice replaces the mirror. Bring the underwear you intend to wear and shoes in the heel height you will actually stand in; hem length can be set no other way. For a pregnant bride, look for soft support with no seam across the bump and a waistband that sits below it, since a maternity gown hangs from the bust rather than the waist.
