Sweetheart or Deep V: Choosing Your Depth

Sweetheart or Deep V: Choosing Your Depth

After several seasons in which the straight strapless line felt almost obligatory, necklines are curving again. The sweetheart has returned for the coming season in a far quieter form than the one brides remember from a decade ago, and alongside it the deep V, usually softened by a layer of tulle or a narrow band of lace. Both decide the same thing in different ways: where fabric begins and skin is allowed to stay.

A softer sweetheart

Today's sweetheart is barely the same cut. The curve is shallower, the dip at the centre only suggested, and the edge often follows the seam of the corset rather than announcing itself with appliqué. It sits well above a structured bodice and a waist dropped slightly lower than the natural one, because a rounded top line balances the firmness beneath it.

For a fuller bust it offers support and draws the torso gently inward. On a narrower frame it reads softer than a straight edge, which can cut across the shoulder line in photographs. Try both in one sitting, one directly after the other — the difference looks small on the hanger and is unmistakable on the body.

The elongating V

This season the plunging V is rarely left entirely open. A fine skin-toned tulle or a slim lace inset carries the depth while keeping it discreet, which matters a great deal for a church ceremony, or simply for a bride who wants to move without thinking about her bodice.

A V lengthens the neck and the torso, so it belongs naturally with column cuts, fluid satin and skirts that only widen below the knee. It also works beautifully in maternity styles, where the line closes under the bust and lets the fabric fall freely. Repeat the same V at the back and the silhouette gains a calm symmetry that you tend to notice only in the second photograph.

What to test at the fitting

  • Look at yourself seated, not only standing — this is where a neckline changes most.
  • Lift your arms as if embracing someone and see whether the edge stays put.
  • Pay attention to what is underneath: boning and an inner waistband do more than the fabric itself.
  • Choose jewellery last; a deep V usually asks for earrings alone, while a sweetheart carries a fine chain well.
  • A veil with a soft edge will not compete with the neckline; a firm bound edge will.

Both lines are available in sizes 34 to 44, to rent or to buy, and fittings take place privately by appointment, without hurry. For brides travelling from Serbia, Croatia or from the diaspora, the rental agreement is valid across the border, so the gown can make the journey to the ceremony with you.
