After several seasons of narrow, fluid gowns that followed the body without resistance, the skirt is widening again. This is not a nostalgic return to the princess dress of decades past. Volume has come back thoughtfully: lighter, softer and far more intelligently built than before.
Three ways a skirt gains width
The first is tulle. Layers of soft, matte tulle create a cloud that moves a moment before the body does — wide, yet almost weightless. The second is organza, the fabric given the most room this season. Cut into ruffles and fine, faintly lustrous tiers, it does not fall flat but curves outward, so the skirt looks as though it is moving even when you are standing still. The third route runs through densely woven silk, mikado and heavier satin, where the fabric itself holds the shape. Little is needed underneath, and the line stays clean, almost sculptural.
The distinction matters more than it first appears. Tulle and organza read romantic and youthful; mikado reads composed and architectural. The same width, two entirely different moods.
How much volume is truly yours
A full skirt is a question of proportion rather than courage. A few things we look at during a fitting:
- Where the width begins. A dropped, gently pointed waistline lengthens the torso and moves the volume lower; a waist at its natural place gives a fuller, more classical impression.
- The bodice stays quiet. Against a generous skirt, the corset needs clarity — firm construction, a straight or off-the-shoulder line, restrained ornament.
- Height and gradualness. Petite brides are usually better served by a skirt that widens slowly from the hip than by volume that erupts at the waistband.
- The number of tiers. Ruffles are loveliest when there are few of them and their lengths differ; too many rows shorten the figure and swallow the detail at the waist.
Volume is judged in the fitting room
On the hanger, a wide skirt is only fabric. Only in the fitting room do you learn how much of it you are actually carrying: how you sit, how you pass through a doorway, how warm the layers are, whether the hem drags or floats. Ask to be shown how the skirt is gathered in the hand for dancing and how it travels, because full skirts travel quite differently from narrow ones. Fittings here are by appointment only and never rushed — a gown like this cannot be assessed in a hurry.
