The slim, fluid silhouette has returned this season, and it has brought a quiet companion: the slit. Not the kind that announces itself, but one that opens only as you walk and closes again the moment you stand still. On the newest collections it appeared beside bias-cut satin, calm crepe columns and lace that follows the body — read as movement rather than daring.
Where the slit begins is the whole story
Before you ask how high, ask where. A few centimetres change the character of a gown far more than the length of the opening ever will.
- Centre front — the most ceremonial choice. It moves symmetrically, looks beautiful on stairs and during a first dance, and asks for a calm, uncluttered bodice above it.
- Side seam — the most discreet. Hidden in the seam, it all but disappears when you are still, then lengthens the line of the leg as you move.
- Wrapped front — one panel of the skirt crosses the other, so the opening travels with you. The softest option, and the most forgiving in photographs.
Fabric decides how much is really seen
Heavy satin falls with its own weight and closes itself, so even a high opening reads as restrained. Crepe keeps the edge clean and straight, without rippling, and suits a spare, minimal line best. In tulle and lace the slit reads as a shadow rather than a cut — an under-layer may stop short while the outer layer stays whole. Crushed silk gives the most life, but suits a bride untroubled by a crease.
It is worth knowing that the edge carries all the responsibility. A narrow, hand-finished hem looks quietly expensive and lasts; a wide, stiff edge shows in every close photograph.
What to test at a fitting
A slit cannot be judged standing still in front of a mirror. Walk in it, sit down, climb a few steps, turn. See how it behaves at a table and when someone embraces you. For an outdoor ceremony, allow for wind — a side slit in a light fabric usually wants a slightly weighted hem or a discreet lining.
Shoes suddenly become visible, so choose them alongside the gown rather than afterwards. And remember that a slit can always be lowered, and only rarely raised.
