Plisse: the fabric that remembers a fold

Plisse: the fabric that remembers a fold

Texture, rather than ornament, is shaping bridal design this season, and few textures speak as softly or as convincingly as plissé. A pleated fabric never falls flat and never gathers by accident; it keeps a steady rhythm of narrow folds that reads even when the bride is standing still, and comes fully alive the moment she begins to walk.

A fold that is set, not arranged

A draped gown takes its shape from the hand of the seamstress, who arranges the cloth on the body. Plissé happens earlier, in the cloth itself: the pleats are permanently set with heat and stay there. Pleated silk, chiffon and organza therefore behave quite differently from smooth satin, and the range is wide, from an almost invisible micro-pleat to deeper accordion folds and pleats that fan outward towards the hem.

What you get is a fabric with its own relief. Light enters every crease and returns in steps, so the gown appears luminous even though it carries no crystals and no sequins. For a bride who wants calm rather than sparkle, this is the most elegant compromise available.

Where it works best

Close vertical pleats work in favour of height: a column or a soft A-line in pleated chiffon lengthens the figure and narrows the waist to the eye. On a fuller skirt, plissé provides volume without weight, which keeps the dress light enough for a summer ceremony outdoors.

  • On the bodice, a pleated panel over structured corsetry softens the line and conceals the seams beneath.
  • On the sleeve, a short pleated flounce gives the shoulder movement without the drama of a puff.
  • On the veil, finely pleated tulle falls in even waves and sits beautifully over a smooth gown.

Pleating is also generous in maternity cuts: the folds ease open where they need to and settle back again, so the gown follows the changes of the final weeks before the wedding.

What to look for at a fitting

A pleated gown should be tried on in motion, with a few steps, a turn and a seated moment, because only then do you see how the folds open and close. Notice where the pleating begins in relation to your waist, and how the hem behaves as you climb a step. Pleated cloth is not pressed in the usual way; it is kept hanging and travels loosely, never tightly folded.

In our salon, pleated styles and the rest of the collection are tried on unhurried and strictly by appointment, in sizes 34 to 44, to rent or to buy. The rental contract is valid beyond Bosnia and Herzegovina, so the same gown is available to brides from Serbia, Croatia and the diaspora.
