When the train goes up: a gown ready to dance

The ceremony is over, the photographs are taken, and the evening is only beginning. At that moment the train that looked flawless on the aisle becomes a practical question: no bride wants to spend her wedding carrying a metre and a half of silk in one hand. The answer is as old as the train itself. It is called the bustle — a quiet mechanism sewn into the gown that turns a ceremonial dress into one you can move in.

This season the question comes up more often. Silhouettes are more constructed, the waist is defined and frequently dropped into a soft point, and skirts are fuller and longer than they were a few years ago. The more layers of tulle, the heavier the satin, the greater the distance between the ceremony and the first dance.

What a bustle actually is

It is a system of concealed loops, hooks or buttons that fasten the lower part of the train to the back of the skirt. Done well, it disappears: the points hide in a seam, under a flounce, inside a fold or behind an appliqué. Done badly, it is visible from the back row. This is why the bustle belongs in the fitting room, not in an improvised rescue an hour before the car arrives.

Four methods, four effects

  • Under the skirt — the train is tucked inside and fastened from beneath. The line stays calm and unbroken, which suits smooth satin, mikado and crêpe.
  • Over the skirt — the fabric is lifted and secured on the outside in a soft drape. It looks natural on lace and on gowns with an emphasised waist, because it echoes ornament that is already there.
  • A wrist loop — the lightest intervention, enough for a short train or airy tulle. Graceful while you walk, though it occupies one hand.
  • A cascade of several points — for long cathedral trains and layered skirts. The weight is shared, and the fabric falls in a run of gentle arcs.

The decision is made at the fitting

The points are marked while the gown is on you, in the shoes you will genuinely wear, because heel height and the position of the waist change where the fabric meets the floor. Walk, turn, sit down. During a private fitting, ask someone from your party to raise the train twice in front of the mirror: on the day it will be done in low light, in a hurry, and often in gloves.

With a gown taken on rental, the solution has to be entirely reversible — loops and hooks are placed so that they leave no mark on the cloth once removed. That is the salon's work, never the bride's worry. Brides collecting a gown for another city or travelling home from abroad are best served by doing the fitting and the bustle rehearsal on the same visit, so that the knowledge travels with the dress.

A train is a luxury that lasts the few minutes of an entrance. The bustle is what allows it to last the whole night — with nothing carried, no anxious glances at the floor, and no standing aside while everyone else dances.
