For years the question of what to wear on your head came down to one thing — short veil or long. This season brides are choosing differently: a small cap that follows the shape of the head, a soft sheer scarf, a single silk flower set to one side. The hair stops being a background and becomes part of the line of the gown.
What is actually being worn
Nostalgia is the strongest current this season, but it is nostalgia without costume. The references come from old albums, then get quietened down until they read as entirely modern.
- The close-fitting cap. Small, often crocheted or worked in lace, it sits against the crown and lets the hair show. A veil may fall behind it, but it need not.
- The sheer scarf. A square of very fine tulle or silk, tied under the chin or at the nape. Softer than a veil, and far better behaved outdoors in wind.
- The low-set veil. Instead of a dramatic fall, the tulle sits low across the forehead and frames the face almost graphically.
- A flower or sculptural ornament to one side. One clean-lined silk bloom or a matte clip breaks the symmetry — just enough to hold the eye.
- Pearl or bow pins. The quietest option of all, and ideal for a chignon or half-up hair.
The rule of one accent
Headpiece and gown should not speak in the same voice. If the dress carries heavy lace, volume or a strong shoulder, keep the headpiece calm: smooth tulle, an unadorned cap. If the dress is a clean satin column or a simple strap silhouette, there is room for a scarf, a flower, or an ornament that tells the story.
The same applies to jewellery. When something sits close to the face, earrings should step back — a small pearl is usually enough. It is also worth thinking about how the piece comes off. Many brides set the veil aside after the ceremony, while a cap or a pin stays on and carries the look into the evening.
Testing it at a fitting
A headpiece cannot be judged in a bathroom mirror. Come to your fitting with the hair you intend to wear, or at least pinned up roughly as you imagine it — the height of a chignon changes everything. Then walk, sit, turn your head, embrace someone. A scarf that looks perfect standing still can shift at the first hug.
Our fittings are private and by appointment, so there is time to see one silhouette with three different headpieces and with none at all. Gowns may be rented or bought, and with a rental it is worth matching the headpiece to the exact shade of the dress — ivory and pure white rarely sit well side by side.
The measure is simple in the end: the headpiece has worked if, in the photographs, it is not the first thing you notice — the face beneath it is.
